Russia: Genghis Khan’s Lasting Influence

800 years ago, the Mongols swept out of Asia and into lands to the west. Kiev resisted and was destroyed. Moscow submitted and became the Khans’ designated collector of tribute. In this regard, all other principalities were subjected to them. This continued for the next few hundred years until the Khans’ influence waned and Russian strength increased to the point that tribute was no longer given. By now, Moscow was firmly ensconced as the center of power in the now formed Russia and the Tsars were all powerful rulers. This is a tradition which is still deeply engraved in Russian society — to which democracy is a threat.
