About Worry, Health and Suffering, Fear, Loneliness, Etcetera

Excerpts from Cecil A. Poole’s book titled “Cares That Infest - Between Man and Happiness”—

Worry: We must take into consideration that as long as we live as human beings there will be problems. No individual reaches a state or condition where the basic questions of life and their relationship to environment cease to raise some problems. It is natural for these problems to exist. Furthermore, it is natural for each human being to strive toward their solution.

Health and Suffering: We are not going to solve another person’s problems or relieve his suffering or give him perfect health even if we could assume his pain. But we are able to make the other person realize that there is unity in all life. All mankind is encouraged and helped if each of us knows that the burden we bear is not ours alone. Therefore, while we cannot always ease the suffering of another, even though we may wish to take away the pain that is his burden, we can practice true compassion.

Fear: If each one of us knew that the future would be free from pain and trouble, there would be no fear. However, we cannot know what the future will be except in terms of the present and the past. Therefore the best way to assure ourselves against fear is to so live in the present that the future will produce a minimum of trouble.

Loneliness: is produced to a certain extent by the viewpoint or mental attitude of the individual experiencing the sensation of loneliness. It may be the result of many contributing factors. Often it is the result of being out of the range of physical contact with those whom we know as friends and conditions with which we are usually familiar. The loss in one way or another of the immediate contact we have usually had with certain people and places is frequently the first step toward loneliness, but not necessarily the final analysis of the cause.

COVID-19: Face Masks Are Far More Than Just A Courtesy

https://www.maskssavelives.org

Low mask wearing cultures have experienced far more deaths than high mask wearing cultures.

“Western countries are experiencing higher rates of COVID-19 infections compared to Asian countries because of the West's aversion to wearing masks. We need universal mask-wearing to aid in lowering COVID-19's virality. Anything that prevents aerosolized viruses from being transmitted lowers the virality of COVID-19.”

Masks aid in decreasing COVID-19's virality by three pathways:
1. Decreasing virus spread by infected individuals. The mask traps virus particles on the inside, preventing the virus particles becoming airborne. Protect others.
2. Decreasing new infections by uninfected individuals. The mask prevents airborne virus particles being inhaled from the outside. Protect yourself.
   3. Limiting hand to face contact.     The mask puts a physical barrier between potentially contaminated hands and passages to one's lungs.”

Note: The sole reason that officials had discouraged face mask wearing at first was to discourage face mask hoarding that would’ve endangered medical personnel and first responders.

In Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea, mask wearing has become prevalent and the Covid pandemic has been greatly reduced. With the proper use of face masks, South Korea was even able to safely hold a national election with a high turnout. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the Covid virus is becoming an ever greater threat (even with the stay-at-home orders). Any hope of keeping the rate of infection down after lifting such orders will depend almost totally on everyone wearing face masks in addition to practicing appropriate social distancing and proper hygiene.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/23/test-trace-contain-how-south-korea-flattened-its-coronavirus-curve

Meanwhile, the ‘open hostility’ demonstrated by people who refuse to consistently properly wear face masks during the Covid pandemic for the protection of others shows that they either don’t understand the import of asymptomatic and presymptomatic contagion tendencies of the nova coronavirus or else they simply don’t care. This same lack of sensibility smacks of the recalcitrant attitude demonstrated by adamant ‘global warming deniers’ who seemingly don’t understand the science of the greenhouse effect. In both cases, the effects are destructive for everyone.
https://time.com/5815299/coronavirus-face-mask-ethics/

In short, no matter how small or how wide is your ‘community’, if you’re not wearing a mask outside of the home, you’re a liability to them. And, if you feel ‘any’ slight presymptomatic sign of infection, you should even wear a mask in the home and be overly cautious.

COVID-19: Calling It the ‘Chinese Flu’ Carries A Burden

During the 1800s, Europeans attributed medicinal qualities to green tea because of the reduction of cholera and such in tea drinkers. In actuality, it was primarily the boiling of the water to brew the tea that killed water borne pathogens which was tea drinkers’ greatest benefactor. This dynamic helped create a great demand for tea, which the Chinese were only too happy to supply. However, China would only accept silver. When the Europeans could no longer provide the required silver, trouble with the British ensued (Opium Wars) with China being forced to accept opium as payment for the tea and to surrender Hong Kong to the British. This was followed by other European and American imperialistic ventures (Boxer Rebellion, etcetera) which then led to Japanese imperialism, hence WWII, etcetera.

As the story of the Pacific Rim saga continues to unfold, China is seemingly returning the favor(s). Thus, I deem it appropriate that my retelling of this story both begins and ends with microbiology (I.e., first, cholera and then later, corona family viruses).

So, if we choose to call COVID-19 the Chinese flu, then we need to at least take responsibility for our ‘group karma’.

COVID-19: Is China’s Incompetence The Pandemic’s True Epicenter

It is China’s coverup and mishandling of the COVID-19 outbreak that lends credence to the possibility that it has all been due to incompetence at a Chinese CDC lab at the pandemic’s epicenter. The autocratic arrogance of the Chinese Communist Party and significant misactions by others on the world stage led directly to the rapid spread of the pandemic.

At the first of January, researchers analyzing the virus successfully mapped the COVID-19 genome, and the information was kept under wraps over a week as party officials claimed there were no new cases.
That allowed Wuhan visitors to return to homes in Thailand, the U.S. and other places carrying the disease.

The dogs that didn’t bark as coronavirus spread across America:
https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-where-are-the-coronavirus-whistleblowers-20200421-6x5zpahilffdhk3aaenim4mmmu-story.html

Note: As of this date, I estimate that (based on death statistics and the timeline of ‘infection to death’, plus, allowing for the current expected rate of increase in infection rates) about 4% of Americans are infected with the COVID-19 virus. That’s a long ways from the 60% needed before ‘herd immunity’ starts to kick in.

It’s going to be a long, long haul. Let’s hope and pray that some effective treatments, etcetera are soon developed.

Maybe we will learn to better consider the term ‘human race’ in its more inclusive form.

Covid-19’s Impact on Global Population Numbers

The global population is currently growing at a rate of around 1.05% per year (about 81 million people per year). So, if the Covid-19 virus magically infected every person on Earth (100%) in 2020, the mortality rate for this would match this level. However, the virus will not infect everyone because ‘herd immunity’ will start to kick in at about the 60% level.
Thus, this means that even during this pandemic the world population will still increase.

7,777,777,777 — an easy number to remember in conjunction with the Easter Day ‘Stay-at-home’ order.

COVID-19: "CORONA Common Sense”

Source unknown:
“Since respiratory therapists are being called upon to help fight the Corona virus, and I am a retired one, too old to work in a hospital setting, I'm going to share some common sense wisdom with those that have the virus and are trying to stay home. If my advice is followed as given you will improve your chances of not ending up in the hospital on a ventilator. This applies to the otherwise generally healthy population, so use with discretion:

1) Only high temperatures kill a virus, so let your fever run high. Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, etcetera will bring your fever down allowing the virus to live longer. They are saying that ibuprofen, Advil etcetera will actually exacerbate the virus. Use common sense and don't let fever go over 103 or 104 if you got the guts. If it gets higher than that take your Tylenol (not ibuprofen or Advil) to keep it regulated. It helps to keep the house warm and cover up with blankets so that the body does not have to work so hard to generate the heat. It usually takes about 3 days of this to break the fever.

2) The body is going to dehydrate with the elevated temperature so you must rehydrate yourself regulaly, whether you like it or not. Gatorade with real sugar, or pedialyte with real sugar for kids, works well. Why the sugar? Sugar will give your body back the energy it is using up to create the fever. The electrolytes and fluid you are losing will also be replenished by the Gatorade. If you don't do this and end up in the hospital they will start an IV and give you D5W (sugar water) and Normal Saline to replenish electrolytes. Gatorade is much cheaper, pain free, and comes in an assortment of flavors.

3. You must keep your lungs moist. Best done by taking long steamy showers on a regular basis, if your wheezing or congested use a real minty toothpaste and brush your teeth while taking the steamy shower and deep breath through your mouth. This will provide some bronchial dialation and help loosen the phlegm. Force your self to cough into a wet wash cloth pressed firmly over your mouth and nose, which will cause greater pressure in your lungs forcing them to expand more and break loose more of the congestion.

4. Eat healthy and regularly. Gotta keep your strength up.

5. Once the fever breaks, start moving around to get the body back in shape and blood circulating.

6. Deep breath on a regular basis, even when it hurts. If you don't it becomes easy to develope pneumonia. Pursed lip breathing really helps. That's breathing in deep and slow then exhaling through tight lips as if your blowing out a candle, blow until you have completely emptied your lungs and you will be able to breath in an even deeper breath. This helps keep lungs expanded as well as increase your oxygen level.

7. Remember that every medication you take is merely relieving the symptoms, not making you well.

8. If you’re still dying, go to ER.

I've been doing these things for myself and my family for over 40 years and kept them out of the hospital, all are healthy and still living today."

If everyone wore masks, washed their hands often enough and didn’t touch their faces with their hands or contaminated objects, then the pandemic could be held down almost as much as the stay-at-home approach has provided. We can’t stay at home indefinitely, so the common wearing of masks outside of the home is prudent.
[Wearing a mask will discourage you from touching your face and infecting yourself via cross contamination through the mucous membranes of your eyes, nose or mouth. I wear my large glasses and mask out in public for this reason. Also, it’s important to fully realize that micro-droplets from a cough or sneeze can remain suspended for a lot longer than you might think (and that a pre-symptomatic COVID carrier spreads the virus simply by talking).]

Note: At this time, I’ve noted that less than half of the shoppers, cashiers and stockers at my grocery store wear any face coverings at all. Almost all, however, honored the six foot space constraint. It seems that we’ve a steep learning curve ahead of us.

COVID-19: Coronavirus Mortality Rate

It appears that the ‘overall’ mortality rate for Coronavirus is about 1% (.01), such that if one million people are infected, then about 10,000 may likely die.
[Multiply 1,000,000 by .01 /
or move the decimal two places to the left in the infected population number.
Example: Of 464,357 infected people, one can probably expect about 4,643 deaths.]

The 1% mortality rate for those infected is influenced by the fact that many people who are infected with the Coronavirus show no symptoms (presymptomatic or asymptomatic). This skews the math such that the initial 4% mortality rate estimates from China have had to be revised downwards.

Note: If everyone in the USA (a population of about 330,000,000) were infected, discounting the asymptomatic ones an estimated 3,300,000 could die (1%). However, as the ‘herd immunity’ factor later kicks in and slows down the infection rate, not everyone will be infected. Plus, a vaccine and possible treatments may eventually come into play.

Meanwhile, ‘hands-on-care’ of the afflicted will influence survival rates. One reason the mortality rates during the Spanish flu pandemic was because patient care, cleanliness and nutrition was often lacking. [Note: My paternal grandfather did much to help care for the sick in his area. His love of onion sandwiches is what he claimed kept him healthy (since then it’s become known that onions, garlic and radishes do contain significant antimicrobial qualities).]
