James Hansen in 2012: Global Warming Induced Climate Change

Top climate scientist James Hansen tells the story of his involvement in the science of and debate over global climate change. In doing so, he outlines the overwhelming evidence that change is happening and why that makes him deeply worried about the future.

Also, if you want to understand why fossil fuel interests are so vehemently denying what he has to say, then listen to the last few minutes of the following video beginning at point 14:28:

For more about the predicament we’re in because too many people try to deny the reality of the greenhouse effect:

A Stitch in Time

Look up into the night sky and find the Andromeda Galaxy. Know that the photons of light from it registering upon your visual receptors have been traveling at the speed of light for 2.2 million years. For each photon, from the time it was emitted from its sun, time has stood still. Its actualizing within your eye is simultaneous with having escaped its star. During its relative time of travel, our ancestors’ distant ancestors evolved as the Isthmus of Panama rose up and altered the world’s ocean currents, thus changing the climate patterns such that Proconsul’s descendants were forced to spend more and more time walking  upright and using the now freed hands to create and use tools to enhance food procurement that fed a growing brain that allowed language development to strengthen social development — tribal organization that expanded into the international communities that we now see becoming more interdependent as cooperation further enhances food procurement in a digital age where social communication is both heightened and diminished, depending on those who use the information technology. The heightening is demonstrated when one has the cognitive ability to grasp the concept of the relativity of time well enough to appreciate the Andromeda’s photons’ instantaneous journey.

Be Brave! Stand in the Truth of Rebounding Joy

As we each go thru our day, we needs be aware that any and all genuinely Christ worthy thoughts and feelings that emanate from us into the world help to purify the soul and are transmitted to the Spirit where they register as though beautiful musical chords harmonizing with the songs of Angels and resonate so clearly with the goodness of God that you hear the whispers of Joy that Angels share with you. Listen well — God’s Love, thus, emanates throughout our Lives.

Global Warming: The Civilization of Mankind

Imagine, for a few moments, that you are in the year 1939. The world is ablaze with WWII that is fueled by new industrialization which is energized by fossil fuels. Now, imagine that you are aware of the physical science describing the effect of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Knowing this, would it not be possible to anticipate that Canada might someday become semitropical — and that a higher level of consciousness needed for the civilization of mankind to survive.

The Porch Light Was On, But No One Was Home

Until Trump pulled us out of the official international effort to reduce the artificial emissions of greenhouse gases, I’d covered a variety of other topics. Since then though, I’ve been devoted primarily to trying to help global warming deniers to “see the light”. Lately, I’ve focused on the greenhouse effect, because global warming cannot be rationally denied if the physical science showing how CO2 blankets the Earth is understood.

It seems though that the one who hasn’t been seeing the light is me. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. And, if it has a burr under the saddle, you can’t even do that.

So, if you are a reader of my blog, I’m glad to be of service. And I do apologize for not allowing comments. Past experience taught me that dealing with trolls was too discouraging. I would, however, encourage you to post a blog of your own (if you’re not already doing so).
[I prefer using Blogger because of their good security protocols and good directions for setting it up in any configuration you like. If you’re wondering how to get started, just use search term: “How to use Blogger”.]

Note: To take better advantage of my collection of postings, please read the directions next to the ‘thumb up’ logo below to use the web version to search my blog for topics you are interested in. For example, the search using the word Life yields:

But, the words ‘life on Earth’ yields:

Classroom Demonstrations of CO2 as a Greenhouse Gas

Recently, a family friend tried arguing against global warming being real based on her discrediting Al Gore. My response was that a 10 minute lab demonstration in an 8th grade Earth Science classroom would show that the Greenhouse Effect is real (with the implication that this demonstrates that global warming is real since all greenhouse gases levels are increasing):

CO2: Giver & Taker of Life on Earth

Plants and animals around the world are gradually being forced towards the poles and to higher altitudes as their former environs become warmer. Those already living in these places are facing extinction if there’s nowhere for them to move to.

Up until recently, the rate of plant and animal extinctions correlated with the human population growth rate. Now, however, the extinction rate is being accelerated beyond this due to climate change induced by carbon emissions from fossil fuels. It should be noted that the last time the totality of Earth’s plants and animals faced such a rapid rate of extinction was when a similar level extinction rate was caused by increasingly higher and higher levels of CO2.

Thus far, each of the previous major extinction level events of macroscopic life in Earth’s history were preceded by ‘marine anoxia’ which was caused by global warming which, in turn, was induced by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide introduced into the atmosphere by prolonged massive ‘basaltic flows’.

Currently, it is the artificial release of carbon dioxide thru the burning of fossil fuels that is the cause of global warming.

Even the extinction of the dinosaurs had almost certainly already finished playing out before the Chicxulub asteroid event occurred. The basaltic flow of the Deccan Traps had seen to that. [Read about the “3 meter gap” for further elucidation.]

The Greenhouse Effect’s Elements

Nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2) and Argon   (Ar) molecules compromise 99% of Earth’s atmosphere. Though these molecules become excited by heat, they are too small to absorb infrared thermal radiation. The larger molecules of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), water vapor (H2O), nitrous oxide (N2O), and various fluorinated gases do, however, absorb the photonic energy known as infrared radiation (IR) and re-emit it. This creates the greenhouse effect.

Global Warming and the Unsinkable Titanic

I had a dream that was actually more of a nightmare. In it, I had composed a short YouTube video that clearly demonstrates the physical and quantum science of the greenhouse effect. Added to it is a 3-paragraph descriptor of the video’s narrative. When I try to upload it, the “system” keeps rejecting it.

Then the dream started over, and over, until I woke up shaken — realizing that people have been delivering this and related messages for many years.

The future will unfold in a very predictable way because mankind’s miscreations have a certain momentum and misdirection of their own. It’s a bit like the Titanic plowing full steam ahead through iceberg laden waters despite the fact that all other ships in the area had come to a full stop because of the warnings that even the Titanic had received. When the iceberg is spotted, it’s already too late.  The momentum was too great to avoid the collision. The maxim “too big to fail” proved deadly.

Note: My best friend’s grandfather was on a Norwegian fishing boat in those same waters, and they’d come to a halt when it got too dark to see. After they learned of the tragedy, all they could do was shake their heads and wonder.

Ironically, the increase in the melting of ice in Greenland has caused an uptick in the number of icebergs being calved and released into the same area where the Titanic went down. It’s forcing shipping companies to now take a day longer going between Europe and the USA.

“Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it. Yet those who do study history are doomed to stand by
helplessly while everybody else repeats it.”

We’re all in the same boat together.

Global Warming: Human Mis•Creation

Industrialization has been powered largely, though not exclusively, by the energy of the sun stored in fossil fuels. Though pollution of our biosphere has been quantified, the greenhouse gases released by our utilization of coal and hydrocarbons have caused other problems not so easily measured. This difficulty had allowed fossil fuel corporate interests some remotely plausible deniability of culpability relating to global warming up until recently. Now, however, even 8th grade Earth Science students know that the greenhouse effect is simple physical science that is demonstrable in the classroom setting with two clear soda bottles, two rubber stoppers, water, 2 Alka Seltzer tablets (CO2), two thermometers and a heat lamp. Add to this a short presentation about light and infrared radiation and there is no rational denial of the greenhouse effect and no sensible denying of the reality of global warming and its influence on our changing climate.

The Elemental Science Behind Global Warming

The elemental force behind the greenhouse effect is the heat trapping quality of the atmospheric gases carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and fluorinated gases. The other elements of the atmosphere (nitrogen, oxygen and argon) are not greenhouse gases because they are transparent to the wavelengths of light responsible for trapping heat — they do not form molecules large and complex enough to block infrared light. Though water vapor is also a greenhouse gas, its levels are ultimately determined by the density of the others.

Trump’s Wall or Not? In ‘The End’, It Really Won’t Matter

It doesn’t really matter if Trump’s Wall is built or not; because, it will be breached and overwhelmed when AGW climate change eventually becomes severe enough to force Latin America to swarm northward. If you doubt this, watch the following videos (especially #6, which I suggest watching first).

What Do The Trees Say About Climate Change?

As I sit bundled up and sipping my hot coffee, I watch and listen to the cold north wind blusteringly tear at the limbs of the Schumard oak trees outside my window. I note that their leaves are vibrating violently and, though mostly red, are stubbornly refusing to completely change colors. So, I leaf back in time through the pages of my Dia•rio and note that, in years past, these very same trees have not remained quite so green for so long. This causes me to recall the recent Christmas card from a family friend living in Alaska, whose ancestors have been there since before anybody ever heard of Jack London. She wrote that their winter storms’ temperatures were not as severe as they used to be. In me, this triggers visions of melting permafrost resulting in thermokarstic flows and accompanied by increasing methane release. This triggers the recent memory of a different family friend launching into a defensive and well rehearsed diatribe about Al Gore and how global warming is a hoax. Sheesh! She’s the one who brought up the subject of global warming ‘out of the blue’. A nice lady, but she probably needs to read about the greenhouse effect. You can’t deny global warming without first denying the physics of the greenhouse effect:

Well, it’s time to go downstairs and get another cup of hot coffee. In the past, I’d have been sitting in the neighborhood coffee shop at this time of day reading the newspaper and sipping freshly brewed coffee. But, they got kicked out after being in the same location since 1987 by a Californian outfit that wanted something ‘bright and shiny’ in that location. The replacement coffee shop calls themselves a ‘coffee bar’ and sells “coffee drinks”. That means the fresh brewed coffee itself is subpar; but, you can’t tell because of the flavorings and sweeteners. The old coffee shop sold the same kinds of coffee drinks and had an excellent reputation for both the coffee itself and the add ons. The difference is that one looks like a 1950s bus terminal while the other looked and felt like a coffee shop, even though both seated equal numbers of people. The new venue’s atmosphere does not encourage one to linger, thus rotating more people thru. Thus, no hard copy newspapers sold, nor are customer conversations to be found in the new establishment; only subdued and downwardly tilted heads focused on bright and shiny electronic screens.

Note: Even the newspaper that I used to read there has lost its depth since it was bought out by a larger corporate interest and has resorted to more outsourcing and deceptive gimmicks to boost subscriptions. They are adrift in a world where an increasing number of people get their news via social media that’s driven by algorithms and questionable sources. And though newspapers depend upon advertising dollars to stay afloat, most popular online news sources depend entirely upon advertising dollars, hence the phenomenon of ‘clickbait news’.

So, in which direction does your news feed lean as to whether or not global warming is real? It tends to depend upon your past online activities. Your device is tracked, your preferences catalogued and you categorized. We all tend to live in bit more and more of a bubble where we are ‘sold’ down the river.

P.S.- My trees and the community gardening center club members who witness the lengthening of growing seasons all say the climate is warming, and those who comprehend 8th grade level Earth Science know that it’s because of the greenhouse effect — global warming is real.

The Shame of Climate Change Deniers

“Shame is that queasy feeling you get when you realize you’ve done something improper, ridiculous… or just flat-out contemptible. But it’s socially invaluable, for feeling ashamed is a built-in jerk alarm, keeping most of us from doing the same embarrassing thing again.
But what if you’re not embarrassed by being a jerk? Sure enough, some individuals who rise to high places are so consumed by self-importance, self-righteousness, self-aggrandizement and all things selfish that they feel no shame — even when their narcissism does gross harm to others. One example is the clique of prominent polluters, politicos and propagandists who are climate-change deniers. They shamefully use their prominence to enhance their own fame and fortune — while glaciers melt, oceans rise, extreme weather expands, species perish and Earth itself spins toward being unlivable.
Unable to acknowledge shame, they need help. Luckily, a feisty group called Cowboys for Liberty has stepped forward to acknowledge it for them by establishing a “Climate Deniers Hall of Shame.” Among the first class of infamous deniers are Charles and David Koch, who’ve dumped more than $100 million into front groups opposing efforts to halt climate change; Sen. Jim Inhofe, the dotty old dean of deniers, who has called global warming a conspiracy spawned by the Weather Channel; and the former CEO of Exxon Mobil, who secretly funded hoked-up “academic” reports to discredit the science of climate change.
The Hall of Shame is fun, but it’s not a prank. It points out that climate change is not only caused by human action, but also by human inaction — and putting names and faces to the small group of humans selfishly preventing progress can help the majority of us see that we can (and must) rise up to stop them.”

International News Organization “Russia Today” Promotes Conspiracy Theories

RT (formerly Russia Today) is a Russian international television network funded by the Russian government. It operates pay television channels directed to audiences outside of Russia, as well as providing Internet content in English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic and Russian.

“Russia Today” is the only international news organisation that promotes conspiracy theories on an industrial scale.

Here’s an example of RT on YouTube:
Contains clever disinformation that may sound reasonable at first blush. Also, the presenter is attractive and her tone engenders trust. The designed effect of this piece is to cast doubt upon the science of global warming.

They have an RT America channel on YouTube:

There can be no denial of global warming...

...without first denying the physical science of the greenhouse effect:
Electromagnetic radiation includes Infrared Radiation (IR) and visible light. Both are absorbed by the surface of the Earth and converted to kinetic energy (heat). This heat is emitted back outward as thermal radiation aka IR. A significant amount of this IR is reabsorbed by the denser atmospheric gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etcetera. This excites their molecular structure and the resulting kinetic energy re-emits IR. Life on Earth is made possible by the capturing of enough IR to keep the biosphere warm enough to sustain life. As the heavier molecules in the atmosphere increase, the amount of IR also increases.

Global Warming, the Wall and Polar Vortices

As worry temporarily decreases during cold weather and new temperature records made, we need to remember that rising global temperatures are causing the jet streams that normally keep polar vortices in check to shift. Foolishly, partisan Republicans ignore global warming and Democrats give the nod to illegal immigration. In the future, as climate change increases the number of climate change refugees, we will regret that we’d not built the Wall sooner and had been more forthright in curtailing global carbon emissions.

The Trouble With Prophecies... that they become more and more self-fulfilling the more they are believed in. When ‘John of Patmos’ had a vision that inspired him to write Revelations, he was detailing a possible future event. Even Jesus indicated that neither He nor the Angels could absolutely know the Future of mankind because of the inviolate Free Will given by God to man.

Comment: To the extent that one believes that Revelations is a God ordained immutable event, then such is the degree to which Global Warming is God’s Will and not our own folly — and, therefore, we need make no effort to be good stewards of God’s Creation.

What It Is That Global Warming Skeptics Don’t Understand

As the sun emits the full spectrum of electromagnetic energy, the Earth absorbs both longer waved infrared light and shorter waved visible light.

This absorbed energy causes thermal heating and is gradually re-emitted in the form of infrared energy. Much of this is reabsorbed by the larger molecules in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide and water vapor, but not the smaller molecules such as nitrogen and oxygen.

During daytime, the positive feedback loop between the atmosphere and the Earth’s surface causes temperatures to rise. More heat is retained than escapes back into space.

Legal vs Illegal Immigration: Statistics About What Americans Think

“Eighty-one percent (81%) of voters nationwide believe that legal immigration is good for America. However, a ScottRasmussen.comnational survey also found that 80% believe illegal immigration is bad.[1]
When you put the numbers together, you find that 62% see a clear distinction between legal and illegal immigration. This majority perspective is often left out of the public debate when people are portrayed simply as pro-immigration or anti-immigration.
Eighty-three percent (83%) of Republicans believe legal immigration is good along with 81% of Democrats and 80% of independents.
The gap is a bit larger on the topic of illegal immigration, but there is still broad agreement across party lines. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of Republicans believe illegal immigration is bad for the nation. That view is shared by 82% of independents and 70% of Democrats.”

FOX News Edging Towards Climate Change Reality?

FOX news is cautiously introducing terminology that will allow their viewers (including Trump) to eventually avoid excessive cognitive dissonance as global weather events become too hard to ignore:

Interaction of Visible Light and Infrared Light With Matter Both Foster Greenhouse Effect

Visible light is either reflected away from Earth, or else it is absorbed on the surface and then re-emitted as infrared light (perceived as heat). This is in addition to the infrared light that the sun sends our way. Thus, the overall energy input to our biosphere is greater than what some overly simplified drawings explaining the Greenhouse Effect are able to convey.

When higher energy short-waved photons of visible light are absorbed and re-emitted as lower energy infrared light, it is a function of quantum physics (based upon how photons interact with atoms’ electrons). yuh

Moving On To Quantum Mechanics

In my previous postings, I’ve introduced the role of infrared radiation in the “greenhouse effect”. This necessitates some understanding of quantum physics. Thus, I shall begin to focus more attention upon this subject now, in addition to the role of classical physics.
Thus, consider the following NOVA video (53 minutes) that explores the world of mathematics and why it explains the physical world:

Quantum Theory (55 minutes):

Also: Secrets of Quantum Physics
Playlist- about 55 minutes each:

Greenhouse Effect Is About Infrared Light

“The greenhouse effect is a phenomenon of ‘radiative transfer” of heat, the process by which the energy of electromagnetic light waves (infrared and visible) is exchanged in matter. Radiative transfer dictates what energy is reflected, absorbed, and emitted.”

When you stand in the sunlight, you feel warmer than when you are in shadow because you are being directly bathed in the radiant energy of long-waved infrared light and that produced by the short-waved visible light of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted from the sun. You are, also, being bathed in infrared energy (heat) being transferred from everything around you, as well as feeling the heat being conducted by the air around you.

“Although you usually cannot see it, all objects give off radiant energy and you can sometimes feel this energy. For example, if there is a pot of hot water on your stove, you can feel the radiant energy it gives off without touching it. You usually call what you feel “heat,” but it is more accurate to think of it as a kind of invisible light called “infrared radiation” that warms your skin...
The amount of infrared radiation energy a warmed object gives off depends on its temperature—the higher the temperature, the more energy is given off. As you know, you can easily distinguish between a warm object and a hot object by holding your hand near the objects and feeling the difference in the heating effect on your hand.”
Note: If a material becomes hot enough, it becomes radiantly luminous. It emits the higher energy short-wave visible light as well as longer-waved infrared light.

Greenhouse Effect and Radiative Heat Transfer

Most of the heat that warms our biosphere comes to us in the form of Infrared Radiation (IR) that is easily absorbed by greenhouse gases as it both enters our atmosphere and as it is reradiated from the surface of the planet after being absorbed and reradiated.

A portion of visible light is, also, transformed into kinetic energy (heat) after it strikes the surface of our planet. This kinetic energy generates and re-emits long waved IR radiation in all directions. That which is radiated outwards is easily reabsorbed by the larger gaseous molecules in the atmosphere. As these greenhouse gas molecules increase their rate of kinetic vibration (heat), they re-emit IR in all directions

Note: Long waved IR is more easily absorbed than shorter waves visible light.
Also, add the incoming IR from the sun to the amount of IR and visible light that has already struck the Earth’s surface as is being reradiated as IR, and you soon find yourself grateful that the atmospheric greenhouse effect isn’t any stronger than it already is (though this is gradually changing).

Note: Thermal radiation is one of the three principal mechanisms of heat transfer. It entails the emission of a spectrum of electromagnetic radiation due to an object's temperature. Other mechanisms are convection and conduction. The interplay of energy exchange by thermal radiation is characterized by the following equation...
