The 1918 flu pandemic was caused by an H1N1 influenza virus. Though the coronavirus Covid-19 is less deadly, it is more contagious. Indeed, note that Covid’s mutant strains are becoming more deadly and even more contagious. This is similar to what happened in 1918 when the influenza virus mutated into the infamous Spanish flu strain that killed 5% of the world’s population.

‘Herd immunity’ induced by people contracting the disease or being vaccinated shall eventually slow down the pandemic. However, increasing rates of mutations shall prolong the pandemic indefinitely. Vaccinations are the reasonable way to build herd immunity and minimize unnecessary suffering.
