DVT / “deep vein thrombosis”:  People who work long hours seated in front of a computer are putting themselves at risk for the formation of clots in the blood of inactive legs.  DVT is more commonly known as “economy class syndrome”.  It’s a threat to anyone who sits for more than several hours without getting up and moving around.

Laughing Yourself Healthy:  New studies indicate that a good sense of humor really can extend your life.  The mortality rate for those that score highest for humor are 35% better than those who score lowest.  In one study, of the 2,015 people who had cancer at the beginning of the study, those with a humorous take on life were 70% more likely to survive than those who were less lighthearted.    by USA Today

“Manorexia”:  Eating disorders in men  are not taken seriously enough --- 25% of anorexics and bulimics are men in America….. also comprise 40% of binge eaters.  Military men are among the groups most at risk, but because of their fear of being seen as ‘unmanly’ are less likely to seek help.    by USA Today

Deadly Procrastination:  Putting things off now and then is normal, but 20% of workers suffer from ‘chronic procrastination’ that threatens their professional and personal lives.  The only way to defeat procrastination is through organization….assess the work you need to do before getting bogged down in it & prioritize it / then schedule when to do all of the different things.     The Orlando Sentinel

Fake Identity:  A fake identity can be purchased for as little as $14 from online hackers who assemble the identity from stolen information.  Access to a stranger’s bank account costs $300.     The Financial Times

Increasing Retirement:  In 1950, the average length of retirement for American men was 8.1 years --- the difference between retirement age (70) and life expectancy (78.1).  But because people have been retiring earlier and living longer, the average reirement now lasts nearly 20 years.  by SmartMoney

“Oil Pulling” Cure For Allergies:   Though “oil pulling” is beneficial in treating more than just allergies…. (Google it), it’s inexpensive and simple to do.  Simply swish one teaspoon of either sesame or sunflower oil (organic preferred) around in your mouth for AT LEAST ten minutes before spitting it into the toilet (do not gargle it / do not swallow it)… it’ll have turned white.  It’s best to do it on an empty stomach (at least four hours after your last food intake / one hour after last drink).  So, as soon as you arise is the best time to do it… by constantly swishing it completely around in your mouth.  Then brush your teeth.  A possible apparent initial worsening of symptoms simply means it’s doing its job…. use commonsense to regulate the frequency of your oil pulling activity.

Heroin Use In Britain: The United Kingdom routinely prescribed heroin to addicts from the 1920s to the '60s, and its addict population remained stable at fewer than 2,000. When laws changed in 1971, the legal market gave way to an illegal one, and the addict population has grown to 300,000.

Dangerous Food:  The food prepared in our own American kitchens is the most hazardous… because most of us do not follow the most basic sanitary standards.  Over half of us do not wash our hands before handling the food.  Almost as many do not clean the cutting boards between chopping up chicken and the salad --- an excellent way to transmit salmonella.  82% undercook chicken / 46% undercook meatloaf….. etcetera.     New York Times

Fat Men Happier:  Obese men are 42% less likely to commit suicide than thin men. [Doesn’t apply to women.]  The Los Angeles Times

Raccoons Invade Fatherland:  American raccoons (introduced into German fur farms in the 1930s) have no natural enemies there and have become terrible pests.  Last year, hunters culled 30,000+…more than 3 times the number from just six years ago…still to no avail.  By Der Spiegel

China’s Farmers:  For the first time, the right to own private property is guaranteed.  This is a tremendous boon to their rising middle class (and especially to their farmers).  Until now, farmers have had no legal title to land that they’ve been farming for generations…. which has been increasingly threatened by corrupt bureaucrats grabbing land for developments.  This overturns their basic system of socialism.  By South China Morning post

Opium Trade:  The number of Afghans involved in the opium trade jumped from 2 million to 3 million last year.  12% of Afghans now have a hand in its  production or trafficking.  by The Washington Times

God’s Increasing Popularity:  The number of Web pages dealing with God and religion is booming….and is nearly as popular an Internet topic as sex.  A search for ‘sex’ returns 408 million hits; a search for ‘God’ yields 396 million.  by The Washington Post

21% Americans Illiterate:  More than 1/3rd of Washington D.C.’s residents are functionally illiterate, while the nation’s rate is 21%.    by Associated Press

Super-rich Hoarders:  Not counting the “sainted” Warren Buffett who gave away $44 billion last year, the 60 leading American philanthropists donated $7 billion, out of their combined net worth of $584 billion.  That’s a mere 1.2% of their vast fortunes.  Multibillionaires are even tighter…giving less than 1%.  [Hmmm? The “eye of the needle”….]  The Los Angeles Times

Identity Theft:  Of the 9 million Americans that got hit for $56 billion is losses, only 1 in 700+ cases were prosecuted.  So, get yourself a shredder, shop only at secure websites, check your credit rating each 4 months (for free), and never ‘give in’ to urgent or threatening communications wanting your financial information. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/

Americans’ High Anxiety:  A second income in the USA family is a necessity, not a luxury.  It costs $200,000+ to raise a child to age 18 for middle-income families (excludes college expenses).  Tens of millions of Americans live in constant fear that a major health problems could reduce them to bankruptcy.

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Tx.), chair of Comm. On Energy & Commerce:  Quoted saying- “Don’t hold your breath”… waiting for coal-fired power plants to be ordered to clean up their mercury emissions.  [ When told that eating mercury-tainted fish could diminish intelligence, Barton scoffed.  “Voters are plenty smart.  They keep electing me, don’t they?”]  Note: Fish in certain Texas lakes are officially too mercury laden for anyone to eat.  How smart is that?

On April 1, 1995, wildlife biologist April Pazzo (pazzo = fool, demented one) discovered the only mammal native to Antarctica --- the Hotheaded Mole Rat.  There used to be plenty of other species of animal life millions of years ago on Antarctica before plate tectonic movements shifted this continent to its extreme southern latitude.  But this unique creature is the only one to adapt and survive.  It is, thus far, found only in a poorly explored area inland from the coast of the Ross Sea.

Its appearance  (and eusocial communal hierarchy) is similar to that of its relative, the Mole Rat of Africa (remember that Antarctica was once attached to Africa).  However, it has a large bulbous protrusion on its forehead (with innumerable blood vessels that radiate tremendous amounts of heat which allows them to melt their tunnels in ice).  It is this that allows them to hunt penguins (their favorite prey).
In the winter when the Emperor Penguins are tightly clustered in small protected areas to protect their chicks, the Hotheaded Mole Rats sense their return.  Slowly, they migrate under the ice into a location that’s directly under the middle of the penguin cluster.  They then force themselves into one concerted ball with their foreheads pushing upwards.  At some point, the weight of the penguins above collapses some of them into the cave of slush beneath that contains the waiting teeth of the voracious rats.  This will be repeated after the penguins have moved to a different location --- but since the winter storms force them to remain in a specific locale to take advantage of the protection of very tall cliffs, it’s only a matter of time before the procedure is repeated.  [Since the ice in Antarctica never melts, old tunnels remain open.  The old cave-ins fill in with blowing snow & are indistinguishable after just a few years.]

Have a good April Fools Day!

Beachcomber Nightmare:  100+ million cargo containers annually cross our oceans.  Each year, 10,000+ are lost overboard …..resulting in millions of tons of floating debris.  Some is washed ashore eventually, but much is caught in “gyres” (circular surface currents) that are up to 1800 miles across and can contain 3+ million tons worth of floatsam.  In some gyres the debris is so thick that you cannot see the water. Texas House Bill 3039:  By Representative Patrick Rose, it will ban discharge of treated sewage in the contributing zone of the Barton Springs watershed. Sewage effluent is one of the top pollutant sources in Barton Springs. Developers in Hays County have applied for a permit to discharge treated sewage effluent into Bear Creek, and this bill would prevent any future attempts to directly pollute our streams and springs. This critical legislation needs a hearing….e-mail Robert.Puente@house.state.tx.us and ask him to “Please schedule a hearing for House Bill 3039.” And also please contact Representative Patrick Rose to express your support for his bill. Increase of Mercury:  On average, three times more mercury is falling from the sky today than before the Industrial Revolution 200 years ago.  With China and other nations firing up at least one new coal powered electric plant each week, it’s no surprise that scientists worldwide warn us to be wary of eating fish (especially pregnant women and children).  [My Comment: It might be the one thing that’ll save sealife from being extinguished by overfishing.]

Support Cleaner School Buses for Kids in Texas:   My Comment --- Over the course of many years serving as a public school teacher, there were some districts I worked in that used school buses powered by diesel engines.  As a teacher, I often had bus duty and got a daily dose of the exhausts no matter what the fuel being burned was.  I never thought much about it; but nowadays, with more information available, I can’t help but wonder about the ‘fine particle pollution’ that  large numbers of students are exposed to by older diesel powered buses.   Recent studies show that pollutant levels inside these buses are often higher than ambient levels outside the bus dues to ‘selfpollution’ causes (information included below).  The Texas legislature is being asked to help ‘clean up’ older buses with money “already collected” for purposes such as this.  If this is something that you can ‘get on board with’, then send an e-mail by clicking on the link below:

HPV Costs:  Which is more expensive?  Risking the health of your daughter or paying big bucks for the vaccine itself (a 3-stage process)?  Considering that 2 of the 4 strains of human papillomavirus (that the vaccine immunizes against) cause 70% of the 11,000 annual cervical cancers in the USA & that the other 2 strains cause 90% of genital warts cases (which 10% of all Americans will contract / both genders), I’d opt for the vaccine…. especially considering that 40%+ of girls become infected with HPV within 2 years of becoming sexually active & that 25% of U.S. girls ages 14-19 are currently infected.  Note that CDC indicates that side effects were minor and expected:  Luckily, most insurers cover the costs, so you’ll only be out $25 for each of 3 office visits (the vaccine runs $120 per dose)….and if this is too expensive, the there’s always the federal Vaccines for Children program. http://www.cdc.gov/nip/vfc/
Thanks, Rich People:  The Congressional Budget Office predicts that the deficit for this fiscal year will be less than half the $413 billion deficit of fiscal 2004.  Even though federal expenditures have increased by 19%, the deficit is shrinking because tax receipts have been increasing because the rich have been getting richer…and their share of the tax burden has increased.  For more explicit details, read:

Mormons Baptize “In The Name Of The Dead”:  One of the most controversial Mormon practices is “proxy baptism”.  In this ritual, they retroactively baptize those who have long since died, to help ensure their access to heaven.  Millions have been so baptized & is the reason for Mormonism’s extensive genealogical records.  The Week  [Personal Comment:  Even though it is extremely arrogant and misguided of them, I could care less whether they  get ahold of my name from the obituaries after I’ve passed on and do so.  It doesn’t mean a thing.  That’s not how things work in the “celestial kingdom”.]

Down Syndrome Treatment?:  Although a new drug called PTZ offers new promise for the treatment of people with this genetic disorder, it has thus far only proven effective in treating mice….PTZ blocks a neurotransmitter called GABA, which is believed to be overabundant in such persons.  [Even so, we all need to sensitize our children to the feelings of all Sp Ed kids.]
Most wars are fought to control resources needed to keep nations’ economies “afloat” and their people alive as population pressures grow.  Other wars involve age-old tribal or ethnic animosities, often between groups within the same country (with each group seeking its own advantage, rather than the good of the nation).  As competition between groups/nations occurs, death from disease, war and starvation will mount as a natural counterbalance to mankinds’ inability to keep his numbers in check voluntarily.  Religious and secular edicts that do not encourage contraception and public education for both genders will only cause the numbers seen below to dramatically increase in the coming century.  [Even though this chart doesn’t include all deaths attributable to human conflicts and is therefore a conservative estimate (e.g., 20+ million from Great Flu epidemic related to WWI; millions in  Siberian death camps post-WWII, etcetera), it does give a generally useful overall accounting of deaths directly related to the making of war.]
