Covid: Herd Immunity May Be Closer Than We Think

As a nation, we are perhaps building a bit closer to ‘herd immunity’ than we might think. Many Covid cases are not reported because some are asymptomatic, others are simply not reported because the symptoms were so mild that testing was ignored, etcetera. The result is that about four times more Covid infections are estimated to have occurred than the official record allows.

Noteworthy is that those who have had Covid at any level of severity and were fully vaccinated afterwards will have an immune system better prepped to deal with Covid than they would have otherwise.

Note: Unvaccinated people who have had asymptomatic or mild Covid only have a few months of antibody protection. Also, they are still at risk for ‘long term effects’ (Post-Covid Syndrome) despite having only suffered minimal impact initially.

It is important for people who had mild cases of Covid to not think they’re now immune to Covid and its variants. It’s, also, a misconception that because you had a mild case that the next infection would be mild as well. Odds are that the mildness of the case was due to receiving a minimal viral load infection the first time around. The more highly contagious variants will make a repeat of that good fortune to be highly unlikely.
