Global Warming: Thermokarst Is Result of Melting Permafrost

As global warming results in the deeper and deeper melting of permafrost, the surface geology changes as methane rich meltwater lakes appear. Some new lakes are over fifty feet deep and are now releasing more than just carbon dioxide and methane from decomposing plant material. Scientists have examined samples of the deep release gases and found the chemical signature of a “geologic” origin. In other words, the methane venting from the lake is emerging not only just from the direct thawing of frozen Arctic soil, or permafrost, but rather from a reservoir of far older sources.
