Global Warming: Fear Is The Mind Killer

The world can be a scary place, especially when your mind is full of doubts about where dangers await. This amplifies the fear factor, and fear is the mind killer that creates short sightedness which, in turn, increases the risks.  Risks that could have been mitigated or avoided altogether.

By the time I was ten years old, I was well aware of the possibility of total global nuclear annihilation. I had even helped dig our family's bomb shelter. Then at age thirteen, the world experienced the Cuban Missile Crisis. And, in school, we were taught to hide under our desks when the air raid sirens went off.

Today's kids still face the likelihood of nuclear war, even though it's not as likely to be worldwide. However, they additionally face the prospect of the future worldwide tragedy of global warming. Though much more difficult to understand and deal with, it causes great angst -- even among those adults who proport to not believe that CO2 is a greenhouse gas.

A sense of hopelessness and despair is not what we want to instill in our children or subjugate ourselves to. Though learning about the effects of global warming is necessary, it should be balanced with ways to take action  on the personal level. Even if you were the only one you know to do so, it would help dispel the darkness and negativity that irresponsibility brings to your soul.

"Fear is the mind killer."

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."

"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain."
